Now, 6 years later (and 8 years later than high school math) it all came flooding back and I could basically phone in my calculus homework. This is really the case for calculus 1 and biology. I think anyone can appreciate the core ideas of calculus. After all, just about everyone I've met who gave up math said that calculus was the reason. It's about how far you want to go. I really enjoyed calculus in high school and college… but it's been 20 years since I studied it. Same reason a lot of people hate spinach or . We don't need to be writers to enjoy Shakespeare. My intended audience here is others who are about to teach Calculus at Michigan, or people who are wondering what it would be like to set up a Michigan-style program in their own departments. Unfortunately, the more common question is “Why do people like math?” As explained by these responders, math simply isn't taught in an interesting way — and our cultural stigma against it certainly doesn't help, either. They said to me, "I was great in algebra and geometry, but when I took calculus, it was like hitting a wall and I couldn't get it at all. I've found that if you go to a subject that you dont enjoy then the hour lectures become sleepy time or drawing time, or some form of obstuction from attention.
